How NOT Networking in Dubai Could Cost You Your Career
The significance of building connections and attending networking events in Dubai cannot be understated. When we think of Dubai, we picture a unique blend of cultures, aspirations, and forward-thinkers, driven by dreams as expansive as its skyline. Dubai is more than just a tourist destination – it’s a global hub for business and innovation. The city is seeing an exponential surge in startups and entrepreneurial ventures. Did you know that Dubai ranked first in the Arab world and 12th globally in the list of the 100 best startup environments for companies in the world for the year 2023?
Dubai’s Competitive Job Landscape
Dubai’s rise on the global stage is not only marked by its skyscrapers and strong economy but also its increasing population. As of August 2023 Dubai population stands at 3.61 million, comparing to 3.41million at the end of 2020. To give you some comparison, in 1980 the population of Dubai was roughly 0.27 million.
Key to this population growth is how Dubai has positioned itself on the global stage. Merging tradition with modernity, Dubai offers an environment appealing to a broad spectrum of tastes. Beyond being a travel destination, its advanced infrastructure, modern amenities, business-friendly policies, and tax-free benefits make it a top choice for both professionals and families to settle.
Drawn by opportunities at prestigious companies or a dream of building their own business, more and more people are choosing Dubai, highlighting its successful and strategic evolution as a global magnet. (There must be a reason I’ve been here for 12 years. 😊).
HOWEVER…
Dubai’s job market has undergone a significant transformation over the years, especially when considering the pre-COVID and post-COVID scenarios.
Before the pandemic, recruitment in Dubai was global. Companies and recruitment agencies would scout for talent worldwide, often willing to relocate promising candidates. This was especially true for senior roles, where firms would even sponsor potential candidates to fly in, allowing them a glimpse of Dubai’s lifestyle. However, the pandemic led to global economic challenges which had an influence on how things were being done, and Dubai was no exception. Post-COVID, there has been a noticeable shift towards local hiring. On top of that, there was a push towards Emiratisation aiming to integrate more UAE nationals into the job market, especially in the private sector.
What hasn’t changed is that connections matter in Dubai.
Personal Experience: The Layoff
Life has its surprises, not all of them pleasant. About eighteen months ago, I was handed an envelope at work. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a bonus, it was a layoff letter instead. I immediately tapped into my contact, only to discover my network was smaller than I’d thought.
Things took a different turn when I went viral with my HireBarbara campaign. That was the moment when I saw the power of the network. The response was overwhelming: I was added to job-related WhatsApp groups, informed about networking events in Dubai, and most crucially, secured a job through the connections I made in that brief period.
Seeing firsthand what a robust network can offer, I’ve made a personal commitment: to actively network and nurture my connections, regardless of where life’s journey takes me.
The High Cost of NOT Networking
Based on my experience, the cost of not having a strong network was high:
– The waiting game: Each job application I submitted felt like throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean. There I was, anxiously awaiting a response on the shore, hoping for a positive reply, but often met with silence or “Thanks, but no thanks” email.
– Hidden opportunities: As I had so many interviews after my campaign, I discovered a surprising fact. Many job positions were filled through word-of-mouth and personal referrals. These were roles that never even made it to public job platforms. I had been oblivious, missing out on these opportunities simply because I wasn’t well-connected or “in the know.”
– Emotional strain: That was a tough one. On a personal front, the absence of a support system from somebody being in the same boat was noticeable. With every impersonal rejection email, I often found myself questioning my self-worth and capabilities. That changed when a kind soul reached out to me on LinkedIn offering to meet up for a coffee to exchange our experiences and challenges during job search.
Building and Maintaining a Professional Network in Dubai
There are a few tips that can help in building and maintaining a professional network.
– Stay consistent: Relationships need nurturing. Regular catch-ups, even if virtual, can work wonders. Setting reminders or scheduling periodic check-ins ensures you remain on their radar.
– Attend the events: I now make it a point to regularly attend conferences, workshops, networking events in Dubai with each one expanding my horizons and contact list. Such engagements not only expand knowledge but plant seeds for future collaborations. (I’m sharing the list of communities at the end.)
– Try digital networking: LinkedIn became my ally. The digital age allows us to connect across boundaries, making it imperative to have a strong online presence (though, I know from experience so many people I speak with shy away from posting) Believe me, engaging in online discussions and sharing insights can amplify your visibility.
– Master the art of conversation: Being a good conversationalist goes a long way in networking. It’s about active listening, asking the right questions, and genuinely engaging with others. I can honestly say that I am still perfecting that skill. (Additional resources at the end.)
– Pay it forward: I ensure to lend a hand to others—sharing job leads, making introductions. Every act of goodwill circles back, often in unexpected ways.
Overcoming Networking Anxiety
Networking can be anxiety-inducing, especially for those who are more introverted than extroverted. It’s essential to remember that building connections is a skill, therefore with some effort and a few tips, it becomes easier over time.
– Facing fears: Starting a conversation with strangers can be intimidating but repetition and practice reduces anxiety. Begin with a smile, it often speaks louder than words.
– Conversation starters: Asking someone about their role or commenting on a conference topic are the usual conversations opener. To feel more confident, consider brainstorming other potential topics in advance.
– We’ve all been there: Remind yourself that everyone had to start somewhere, and even the most experienced networkers had their awkward moments.
Networking Beyond the Job Hunt
Networking is more than just a tool for job searching; it’s a bridge to numerous opportunities and growth experiences in both professional and personal life. It can unlock doors you didn’t even know existed.
– Endless perks: Apart from career opportunities, my network has gifted me with mentorship, partnerships, and personal growth. And in a dynamic place like Dubai, these connections often extend beyond the typical networking event.
– The chain reaction: One introduction often leads to another. The exponential potential of networking is nothing short of magic, it can turn simple introduction into an opportunity that never even crossed your mind.
– Safety net: With a strong network in place, there’s an underlying confidence in navigating the professional world. It acts as a cushion, making me feel more confident to face any career uncertainties that might come my way.
Conclusion
Looking back, the layoff wasn’t a setback; it was a redirection. Sometimes, life’s challenges are disguised as opportunities.
